What Are the Rules of the 21st Century?
Start Learning How to Play the Game of Life
"I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."
— Henry David Thoreau (Walden: Or, Life in the Woods)
You must follow your dreams.
Sounds easy enough, right?
But then life happens.
So now what?
How the 21st Century Works
In the last edition of The School Doc Newsletter, we talked about how the 21st century works and why it is so different from the 20th century. And the conclusion we came to was the internet. The internet changed the world and gave you 100x more opportunities than your parents, grandparents and even your great grandparents.
But what good are opportunities, if you can’t SEE THEM??
And that’s what this edition is going to focus on. How to see the opportunities right in front of you. So grab a cup of coffee, because you’re going to love this edition of the newsletter.
Career
There are 3 categories for this topic. Career, wealth and fame. You have to pick which one of these categories means MORE to you than the others. I’m not saying that you don’t care about wealth or fame, but you need to decide which one of these categories is your reason for getting up in the morning.
If you choose career, then you need to start thinking about your life in the future. So do me a favor and close your eyes and picture yourself doing (fill in the blank). Yes, imagine yourself doing (fill in the blank.)
Open your eyes. And write down everything you saw. Where were you located? What were you doing? Describe the job.
Once you do that, now sit down and figure out — who else does this job right now? And start doing research into people who do what you just “dreamed about” in your mind.
When you’re done with that research, sit and think about how those people make money doing that job. That’s right, how do they earn a living BEING that job you imagined in your head.
Wealth
If you chose wealth, here’s what I want you to do. Pick a number, any number and write it down on a piece of paper. “How much money do you need?”
If you do this correctly, you might need to take a second to figure that out. Have you ever sat down and thought about how much money you actually need in life? Not how much money sounds good, but how much money do you need?
If you want a house, a car, a boat, a private jet, a dog, kids, and luxury vacations, how much does all that cost? And write down that number on a piece of paper.
When you’re done, here’s what I want you to do next. I want you to research people who make that amount of money in life. And trust me there are thousands of people who make that $ dollar amount in America. So your job right now is to find out who those people are. I want you to limit yourself to 10 people.
When you have created your 10 wealthy people list, look at what they do to earn that money. And not only that, but find out how they got to where they are right now. Don’t just look at the outcomes, look at the journey that got them to that point.
Fame
If you choose fame, sit back and think about what “type” of fame do you want? Do you want global fame, where everyone knows your name? Do you want industry fame, where the people who matter in your field know who you are? Or do you want some other level of fame?
Take a minute to think about it.
Here’s what I want you to do. I want you to write down what type of fame you want and describe it in as much detail as you can.
