The 8 Things You Need to Start a Business with $300
Part Two: How to Overcome the Most Common Obstacle to Getting Started
In last week’s newsletter, I promised to give you a list of “The 8 Things You Need to Start a Business with $300”
And I like to keep my promises.
So here is that list:
A laptop or a mobile phone
social media accounts
snapchat or instagram (if you don’t have a mobile cellphone data plan)
access to the internet
a subscription to a graphic design program (ie. canva, adobe)
a domain name
a registered email address (attached to the domain name)
some type of web hosting site
The Young Entrepreneur Program
My goal is to build an online 21st century school for entrepreneurs.
But what you need to understand is that everything you want to accomplish with your startup venture is going to take more time than you realize. And that’s just reality.
So here’s my first suggestion.
Stop beating yourself up.
I am a very ambitious person.
In fact, I might be 10x more ambitious than you will ever be, which means that I can also be my own worst enemy. And that’s because when I don’t achieve my goals—I can get very upset with myself.
But you need to stop beating yourself up.
Step One
Reframe the Situation
There’s a concept in psychology called “reframing,” which basically means looking at the situation from a different perspective.
And if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, then you need to master this skill of “reframing.”
That’s because entrepreneurs need to be able to see the world differently. And if you can’t reframe—then you are going to run into more obstacles and not know how to overcome them.
The skill of “reframing” is vital to the success of your startup.
For Example
I highly recommend you read the Biography, “Steve Jobs” written by Walter Isaacson. And the reason you should read this book is simply because you need to understand the mindset of Steve Jobs.
What you will learn inside this book is that Steve Jobs used to do what is now referred to as, “reality distortion.”
But that’s just a fancy way of saying “reframing.”
Yes, Steve Jobs was a master of “reframing” a situation.
If a group of engineers came to him and said, “we can’t do this.”
Steve Jobs would “reframe” the situation for them and show them that they were looking at the problem the wrong way.
The iPod was a result of “reframing.”
The iPad was a result of “reframing,”
The iPhone was a result of “reframing.”
Apple’s engineers all came to the same conclusion that every software engineer in Silicon Valley came to, “this cannot be done.”
Thus, the real genius of Steve Jobs was his ability to “reframe” the situation so that the same people who said something was impossible, turned around and made it possible.
Step Two
How You Can Use “Reframing” in Your Business
What business obstacle does your business face right now?
Does that obstacle seem impossible to overcome?
If the answer is YES, then try “reframing” the situation.
It’s not going to be easy, but what you need to do is stop thinking about the problem from the same perspective that everyone uses to look at the problem. Instead, what you want to do is start looking at the problem from a different perspective.
For example, in my own startup journey, one of my goals is to build an online 21st century school for entrepreneurs. The problem I didn’t realize before was that I am not capable of building that school on my own.
The reality is that if I want to build an online 21st century school for entrepreneurs, I’m going to need a team to help me.
But it took me a long time to come to that realization. And that’s because I wasn’t “reframing” the problem. I was doing what most people do, which is run into the same obstacle over and over until you get frustrated and overwhelmed.
Stop doing this to yourself.
If you run into a business problem — ANY PROBLEM —Stop and think for a second.
What is the problem I’m facing?
Why am I not able to overcome it?
Is there a way that I can “reframe” the situation, so I can see it from a different perspective?
Once you follow these three questions, you will be very surprised at how many impossible problems, you start to solve.
If Steve Jobs didn’t “reframe” the situation for his software engineers, then the world would never have seen an iPhone and the standard for smartphones would be something else, besides the iPhone.
Can you imagine how different the world would be today without the iPhone?
Do You Like Learning for Free?
I started this newsletter for young entrepreneurs, because there aren’t a lot of valuable resources out there that are completely free.
And when you first start out—you don’t have a lot of money to waste.
Therefore, what I hope is that young entrepreneurs subscribe to this newsletter, read this newsletter and share this newsletter, in order to continue to grow a smart, kind and just community of ethical entrepreneurs.
Because let’s be real for a second.
It doesn’t matter what stage of business experience you have—every business runs into challenges and faces obstacles.
Therefore, my hope is entrepreneurs and business owners read this newsletter each week and learn something that they can use in their everyday business lives. And not only that, but they find the newsletter and the community so valuable that they want to share it with other good, honest hard working business owners.
So this is how I used “reframing” to grow this newsletter to over 3,600 views.
My original idea was to build an online 21st century school for entrepreneurs, but I quickly realized that that project is too big for one person to accomplish. That’s why I needed to “reframe” the situation.
If I can’t build an online 21st century school, what can I build by myself?
And the answer is this newsletter.
Does this newsletter solve every problem young entrepreneurs and business owners face? And the answer is NO.
But that’s not the point.
This newsletter is 100% Free. And right now, there are not a lot of resources out there that help young entrepreneurs and business owners with this much value for $0.
I haven’t abandoned my original idea, but I recognize that banging your head against a brick wall isn’t a good use of my time and energy.
So here’s what I want you to do:
Take a minute to think about your business or startup.
Describe the roadblock you keep running into?
And this time, instead of looking at the roadblock the same way, try and “reframe” the situation, so you can see the problem from a different perspective?
Need Some Help?
The first time you try doing “reframing” might be very difficult.
Don’t beat yourself up, just remember that “reframing” is a new skill to you.
And anytime you learn a new skill—it’s going to be tough in the beginning.
Which is why I want to help you learn how to “reframe” and also get better at it, so you can use it to overcome more obstacles and roadblocks in your business journey.
There are two ways I can help:
