What do you want to be when you grow up?
All of us have been asked this question when we were little. It’s a universal question, but have you ever noticed that no one cares about the answer.
Parents ask their kids this question all the time—”what do you want to be when you grow up?”
And then they ignore the answer.
Teachers too!
When I was five, my mother asked me: What do you want to do when you grow up?”
And I told her, “I want to make pizzas.”
She did not expect that answer from her five-year old.
So what did she do?
She ignored it.
Dealing With Negative Self-Talk
“I think, therefore I am”
—Descartes
When we see this quote, we think we know what it means, but what if this famous quote reveals something different about humanity that we want to ignore.
So here’s the truth—what separates human beings from every other species on the planet is that we have the capacity to think. Not only that, but we can process what we think and then translate that into language.
But here’s the problem.
When you have the capacity to think—you also have the capacity to have positive and negative thoughts.
And worse—you have the capacity to fill your brain with negative self-talk.
Psychologists do not understand why human beings self-sabotage themselves at the rate that we do. The truth is no other animal species actively tries to self-harm itself like humans do.
But if you cannot control your brain—it will try and destroy you.
Enter Self-Doubt.
So how do we overcome self-doubt? How do we become our own best friend?
Step One
Acknowledge it.
The first step to overcome self-doubt is to admit that you have doubts. Ignoring negative self-talk is how it can take control over your mind. Therefore the more you acknowledge it and address it—the more power you have over it.
Self-doubt lives in the shadows of our mind.
When the negative narrative loop plays over and over in the back of our head, that’s when we stop trying to be the best versions of ourselves.
Therefore, don’t allow those negative thoughts to linger.
Acknowledge them. And then address them.
Step Two
Learn the Word Yet.
The three most powerful letters in the English language are Y. E. T.
What does this word mean?
Why is learning “yet” so powerful?
And the answer is that the word “yet” takes you off the hook. That’s right, the minute you use the word “YET” in a sentence that describes yourself—you give yourself permission to move forward.
Therefore, the word “yet” is the gateway to your dreams.
But why is “yet” so powerful?
The problem most people can’t handle is how crippling self-doubt can be. If we listen to the negative self-talk in our minds—we tend to quit our passions and our dreams before we even get started.
It’s as if your own mind is preying on your own insecurities.
So why would you allow that to happen?
Imagine if Lex Luther could read Superman’s mind? And then Lex Luther used Superman’s negative thoughts against him?
That’s exactly what your own brain is doing to you.
You are reading your own thoughts and then using your weaknesses against you.
That’s why you need to learn the word “YET!”
Here’s an example…
What if your dream was to start your own business.
But before you begin your dream journey, you write down a list of problems you know you’re going to face:
I don’t have enough capital
I don’t have any brand awareness
How am I going to find customers?
How do I make money?
I don’t even know how to run a business
Without the word yet—this list might seem overwhelming. In fact, without the word YET—you might want to quit before you even get started.
And the truth is—this is why 99% of people will never pursue their dreams.
But you want to be part of the 1% that do.
You want to live your best life and chase after your dreams.
That is why you need to learn the word YET and use it like this:
I don’t have enough capital YET
I don’t have any brand awareness YET
I don’t have any customers YET
I don’t know how to make money YET
I don’t know how to run a business YET
Do you see the difference now?
When you put the word YET at the end of every problem or issue you face—you are telling your brain, “I’m in charge now, and it’s time you get on my side for a change!”
Step Three
Betting On Yourself
After you follow Steps One and Two, now you’re ready for Step Three.
But here’s the unfortunate truth.
You didn’t learn how to overcome self-doubt in school. It’s one of the many issues I have with our K12 system.
But it’s ok—you have the Overcoming Obstacles newsletter now.
So here’s how we do step three.
There is a real danger to allowing self-doubt to go unchecked. And that danger is that you will start to feel “oppressed” in your life. The problem is there is no external forces that are holding you back—the truth is that you’re holding yourself back.
Therefore, the way to overcome this oppression is:
Bet on yourself.
That’s right—you need to believe in yourself and develop enough self-confidence that you can take the next step toward chasing your dreams.
Because what is holding you back?
You deserve to be happy. You deserve to follow your passions. And you deserve to succeed in life.
But you will never achieve any of those things unless you bet on yourself first.
