In this week’s episode, The School Doc introduces the first-ever 21st century cross-curricular course in K12 history. It’s called the 28 Days of Black History. And what makes this course so groundbreaking is that it is the most complete and comprehensive look at Black History in the K12 system.
This isn’t one day of Black History - but 28 straight days of real historical record.
For example, did you know that it was illegal to be Black in America? Yes, this is true. In 1787, the US Congress voted to count all Black Americans as 3/5ths of one person. And this is just one thing students will learn on Day 3 of this groundbreaking course.
Not only that, but this is the only course in K12 history to be written to provide 21st century learners with a cross-curricular learning experience. And for those that don’t know what that means—let me explain.
We all went to school—that’s the common bond that every American has with each other. And since we all went through school, we all know what school was like. Yes, we all sat in classrooms and took classes taught be one teacher in one subject.
But guess what? That’s the old way of teaching. Yes, according to academic researchers—this is the opposite of how 21st century students learn. In fact, what 21st century learners need are cross-curricular courses.
The 28 Days of Black History is the first cross-curricular course in the K12 system. This course was designed to be taught by both English and Social Studies departments at the same time. What that means is students will get two different perspectives on the same course. And that’s what researchers want 21st century learners to receive in school.
